Chapter 1190: Wedding
Chapter 1190: Wedding
Wei Kaiyun arrived at that table and respectfully greeted all the elders present."Young man, sit down. We old folks want to take this opportunity to thank you properly."
"Elder, you’re too kind. I’m also a member of Li Family Village."
"Good, good. As long as you consider yourself one of us from Li Family Village, we elders can be at ease."
Wei Kaiyun sat down respectfully, casually chatting with the elders.
As people grow old, they tend to repeat the same thing over and over. Every time they asked the same question, Wei Kaiyun answered the same way, without any sign of impatience or disdain.
Li Yunqiao was also at this table and was genuinely impressed by Wei Kaiyun’s demeanor.
The elders had difficulty chewing, so the dishes at this table were different from others. There was no kelp salad, only scrambled eggs.
Li Yungui also brought out his own brewed wine. While it wasn’t meant for heavy drinking, each person who liked to drink got a bowlful.
Wei Kaiyun stood up and poured a full cup of wine for each elder, using those small one-ounce cups.
"These are like little spoonfuls, how much wine can they hold? Just drink directly from the bowl."
"Elder, drinking is all about the atmosphere. Today is a joyful day, and we’re all sharing the joy. If you like the taste, I still have a jar of sorghum liquor at home. I’ll bring some over for you."
With age comes wisdom, so they understood Wei Kaiyun’s intent, "Sure, just bring me five pounds."
"Alright, no problem. I’ll bring five pounds for each of you tomorrow."
Not everyone could fit in the village, so there were twenty tables set up on the street as well. With ten large pots cooking, the atmosphere was incredibly festive.
Xu Chunshan was starting to worry that his wife hadn’t eaten yet, but there wasn’t much he could do.
The chicken, braised pork, small cuts of meat, and fish were all served along with the stir-fried dishes.
But stir-fried dishes were served right in large bowls, a bowl of cabbage stewed with tofu, and a bowl of cabbage stewed with tofu sheets.
These were all stewed with broth from the braised pork, making the flavor quite good.
The potatoes stewed with vermicelli were made using chicken broth, ensuring every dish had a meaty flavor.
Large serving dishes of steamed tri-grain rice made with rice, millet, and sorghum rice, were brought out, signaling it was time for the meat dishes.
Qu Xiaoli was busy running around today. Accompanying the new bride were Tao Yanzhen, Li Xue, Zheng Lihong, Lu Fengzhen, Liu Cuilan, Jin Erlin’s wife, daughters, and two young boys.
"Sister-in-law, you hurry and have a few bites. The meat is really delicious, and soon you’ll need to go toast with my brother."
Li Xue was tending to Meng Lin, making sure she ate. Although women didn’t have to drink during the toast, they still had to accompany, making it hard for them to eat.
Liu Cuilan, not paying any mind, just kept her head down and ate.
Zheng Lihong and Lu Fengzhen felt embarrassed watching her behave this way in front of the new bride and other guests. It was inappropriate, making them look foolish.
"Brother, you should hurry and have a few bites too. Uncle will come calling for you soon."
Lu Fengzhen was also making sure Jin Erlin’s wife and kids were eating.
At this table, besides Liu Cuilan, even the children were on their best behavior, not acting out of place.
After eating for a while, Liu Cuilan realized the situation and remembered it was a bridal table, not an everyday feast.
So, she toned down her behavior, too embarrassed to even look up at others.
The adults managed themselves better, but the children’s curiosity couldn’t be concealed, so the three children of the Jin Family were discreetly observing Liu Cuilan.
She herself might not have noticed, but Li Xue and the others did, feeling quite embarrassed about it.
Li Yunqiang was sitting with Jin Erlin, Zhuang Zhiyun, Li Cunshan, and a few other capable middle-aged villagers.
He hadn’t expected Director Zhuang to come over. Xiang Dong had already mentioned that they were moving out in about half a month and had begun preparing.
Everyone at this table was drinking, leading to all sorts of topics being discussed.
Li Yungui asked Cheng Lin to call their young couple over, at least to offer a toast to the elders.
A family of four approached as the elders were sipping their small drinks, happily chatting with Wei Kaiyun.
The young couple toasted, and the elders all drank. Wei Kaiyun substituted water for wine.
"This Manjiang’s wife looks blessed."
Wang Menglin was aware of the capabilities of the village elders, so she greeted each of them with great respect alongside Li Manjiang.
"Not bad, not bad. Our Manjiang’s wife is good."
Being recognized by the elders, Wang Menglin felt quite happy.
After toasting at this table, the family of four raised their glasses together in the courtyard, then moved outside, joining the others in toasting and congratulating them.
"Manjiang, you and Meng Lin go eat now."
"Mom, you and Dad go eat. We’ll handle things over here."
Qu Xiaoli smiled as she patted her eldest daughter-in-law’s hand, "Today, you two don’t need to worry. Go on."
She hurriedly went to the old courtyard, where four tables were set up for the women who helped to eat later.
"Xiao Li, sit down and eat," Da Guo’s wife called out to Qu Xiaoli when she entered.
"Xiao Li won’t be hungry even if she doesn’t eat today."
"Haha, isn’t that right? She’s too happy to be tired or hungry."
"Aren’t the rest of you the same?" Qu Xiaoli sat down next to Da Guo’s wife. She truly felt exhausted.
At this kind of festive banquet, there was hardly any cleaning up to do; plates were almost licked clean, so the helpers only needed to worry about washing the dishes later.
The educated youth were split into two tables, and some villagers joined them. They hadn’t had meat for a long time, and there were even three types of meat. Even the vegetables tasted meaty and were rich in fats. With the exhausting autumn harvest, they couldn’t hold back, diving into their meals.
The meal lasted until after 1 PM, then everyone willingly stacked the dishes on the tables.
Li Xue sat with Wang Menglin inside; while there was nothing specific to do, new brides typically didn’t go outside to see guests off.
Li Manjiang was outside bidding everyone farewell. He hadn’t drunk much today, just about two ounces during toasts.
So once most people had left, he helped his younger brothers with clearing the tables.
Wang Menglin and Li Xue also went out to help.
"Manjiang’s wife, you don’t need to do anything today. As a new bride, today’s the only day you can justifiably take it easy."
Wang Menglin knew these women meant well, but she couldn’t truly stand by and do nothing.
"Thank you, Aunties, for today. This is our family’s event, and I couldn’t just watch the elders work while I do nothing."
Her words made the women even more fond of Wang Menglin. This young bride was sensible.
