Chapter 1370: Ambush on the Road
Chapter 1370: Ambush on the Road
Hawk called the commanders of the Third and Fourth Battalions over and told them everything that had happened. The more Grizzly Bear and Sea Horse listened, the darker and more terrifying their expressions became, waves of shock and fury rolling off them at the same time.
"What? The Spine Team is finished?" Grizzly Bear’s eyes were bloodshot.
"Peng Bird!" Sea Horse gnashed his teeth, hating Peng Bird’s group to the bone.
Up to now, they still didn’t know the identities of Ye Fan and the other six, so they could only dump all their hatred onto Peng Bird and his people.
They had no way of learning of the existence of Ye Fan’s seven-man team; they could only form a vague impression based on the fake identity Ye Fan was using.
The three commanders stayed silent for quite a while before Grizzly Bear finally couldn’t hide the bitterness in his voice: "What a brilliant move. This ’killing with a borrowed knife’ was played beautifully. To pull this off, you don’t just need enough intel, you also need enough brains. It’s obvious our enemy is not to be underestimated, whether in brains or in ability."
"Yeah, the enemy’s strength has exceeded our expectations, even more terrifying than we imagined." Sea Horse sighed.
"There’s one thing I just can’t figure out. General Hawan’s drones were already in the air. In theory, no one could have discovered that. With just those seven enemies, it’s impossible they could have known about the drones, so how did those seven find out about their existence and then divert the disaster onto the Spine Team?" Hawk was full of doubt.
"Could it be someone inside General Hawan’s own people leaked it? Other than that, there’s no other channel for such intel to get out." Grizzly Bear said.
"Boss Zuo’s feud with us runs deep. Maybe Boss Zuo also got involved and provided intel to our enemies. It wouldn’t be strange if he had eyes inside General Hawan’s ranks." Sea Horse speculated.
"Besides a leak from inside General Hawan’s people, there’s another possibility. Maybe some satellite picked it up, and that’s what gave our enemies such a huge advantage." Hawk said.
"Big Bro, you mean—" Sea Horse’s expression tightened. "A great power is deliberately targeting us?"
"This kind of high-tech capability is only in the hands of great powers. From that angle, we can try to infer the enemy’s identity." Grizzly Bear said.
"Our enemy is Peng Bird—everyone in the Underworld knows that. This is a firefight between different forces in the Underworld. Accusing any great power without evidence could bring annihilation down on us." Hawk said solemnly.
"We kill the enemy, and even if they’re from some great power, they can’t say shit about it." Sea Horse said viciously.
"Of course. I just hope I’m overthinking it. If it really is like that, then we’re in real trouble." Hawk didn’t want to think too much along those lines; the pressure would be too great, enough to make a man afraid.
"Big Bro, this line of thinking of yours might actually be right." Grizzly Bear said gravely. "Based on what we know about Peng Bird, Peng Bird’s group shouldn’t be this formidable. There’s definitely something off here. And now we can’t find any trace or clue of Peng Bird’s people at all—that makes it even more mysterious, and even more suspicious."
"At this point, whether the enemy really is Peng Bird getting intel support from Boss Zuo, or a fake Peng Bird group made up of elite Warriors from some great power, it doesn’t matter anymore. Only by killing them and figuring out who they are can we expose the truth." Hawk’s expression went cold, his voice full of killing intent.
"Even though my Poison Dragon Mercenary Corps has taken devastating losses and been hit at the root, the enemy is still only seven people. They can’t possibly get substantial reinforcement. That at least lets us breathe easier. If they back off in the face of difficulty, fine. But if they’re bold enough to come straight to our lair, then we’ll have a real good game with them." Sea Horse’s killing intent boiled over.
"Get ready for war. As assassins, they’re definitely going to go all the way against us. There’s no way this ends peacefully." Hawk was crystal clear.
"I just don’t know if White Whale can make it back safely." Grizzly Bear had a certain amount of worry.
That worry wasn’t baseless. The hunters under General Hawan weren’t the biggest threat, but there were other threats out there—especially that formidable enemy they feared. There was no way they would let White Whale slip away easily.
If White Whale was killed out there, not only would a target be eliminated, it would also crush the Poison Dragon Mercenary Corps’ morale. How could those seven enemies possibly pass up a chance like that?
"It all depends on White Whale’s luck. There’s nothing we can do." Hawk was extremely helpless. "Right now White Whale is racing against his own life and death. If he can get out of the danger zone before anyone tracks him down, fine. But if he doesn’t make it in time and gets discovered by the enemy, he really won’t be able to escape this calamity."
In their eyes, only Ye Fan’s team of seven posed a real threat. Everything else didn’t amount to much.
"We can’t do anything? We’re just going to sit and watch?" Sea Horse was unwilling.
"You want to go rescue him? Is there even time? Can we pull it off?" Hawk said. "Right now we can only dig in at our base, wait at ease for the exhausted enemy, and let them come to us to die. Any reckless move is pointless."
Unwilling as they were, Sea Horse and Grizzly Bear could only accept this reality.
...
Where Ye Fan’s team of seven was located.
Zhang Lu and the others were looking at Ye Fan with blazing eyes, full of admiration.
Using a borrowed knife to kill—the move had been played to perfection.
Using General Hawan’s hand to wipe out the Spine Team, that maneuver was enough to make anyone bow in absolute respect.
Zhang Lu and the rest still hadn’t fully come back to their senses from the shock.
"The Spine Team is gone. For the Poison Dragon Mercenary Corps, that’s a catastrophic blow." Ye Fan looked at them and said calmly, "Next, we kill the fleeing White Whale, then head straight for the Poison Dragon Mercenary Corps’ base."
"These past few days, we’ve run into plenty of obstacles, but we’ve also scored some phased victories." Zhang Lu said with a smile. "White Whale is like meat on the chopping block and we’re the knife. White Whale isn’t getting away."
"Peng Bird has sent word. They’ve been tracking White Whale’s group the whole way. It’s about time we moved." Ye Fan said.
The seven of them packed up quickly and drove off in a secondhand car they’d bought on the black market.
In the blink of an eye, it was the next day.
On the border between D Country and M Country, not yet inside M Country’s territory, still in D Country.
Ye Fan’s car sat blocking the road in a desolate stretch. In the distance, on a winding dirt track, two vehicles were coming in fast, kicking up rolling clouds of dust.
The people in those vehicles were White Whale and his crew.
Ye Fan stood alone in the middle of the road, while Zhang Lu and the other six lay in ambush, hidden in the dark.
When the vehicles carrying White Whale’s group were still about fifty meters from Ye Fan, they began to slow down.
"Second Battalion Commander, there’s someone blocking the road up ahead. From the looks of it, it’s that leader of the seven." Amir said in shock as he gradually made out Ye Fan’s altered appearance.
