Chapter 1371: How Can I Die in Peace?
Chapter 1371: How Can I Die in Peace?
"All along the way, I’ve been wondering why we didn’t encounter any obstacles. Turns out, they were already lying in ambush on our escape route, waiting for us to take the bait," White Whale sighed, utterly exhausted. She looked at Ye Fan’s figure, and an involuntary fear started creeping into her heart.
From the moment Black Shark’s forces began to retreat step by step, to Black Shark’s death and the defeat of the Spine Team, her inner pride had been completely drained. Now, she was quite afraid of Ye Fan and his group.
She still prayed inwardly to return safely to the Poison Dragon Mercenary Corps’ stronghold; by now, her slightest hope had vanished.
"Second Commander, what should we do now?" Amir asked anxiously, "Should we turn around and retreat immediately?"
"What’s meant to come will come; we can’t avoid it," White Whale smiled bitterly, "The opponents are all snipers. At this point, we no longer have the chance to escape. We can only face the facts."
Amir held his tongue, agreeing with White Whale’s words but knowing they couldn’t just wait for death. He could only remain silent.
"How did they know our retreat route?" Amir wondered.
"This is the border of D Country. With Lao Zuo’s intelligence support, we were bound to be exposed wherever there were people, making it plausible for them to ambush us halfway," White Whale sighed. "I even suspect that the hiding location of the Spine Team was also leaked by Lao Zuo. It’s understandable if Lao Zuo has spies within General Hawan’s inner circle. Our enemies having such intelligence and using a borrowed knife to kill is not unprecedented."
She could only think that their exposure was due to Lao Zuo secretly assisting Ye Fan and his team of seven.
The defeat of the Spine Team was also due to the intel provided by Lao Zuo, giving the opponents a chance to strike.
Although these guesses leaned away from facts, it was a plausible explanation.
"Why haven’t they shot us yet? Are they waiting for us to walk into the trap ourselves?" Amir asked.
"Perhaps they want to get information about our stronghold from us," White Whale said, her face ashen.
"Would they really dare to go to our stronghold? Are they seeking death?" Amir said, incredulous.
"If they dare to do this, they must have something to rely on," White Whale lamented. "Ever since those seven appeared, no one believed they had the capability to challenge the Poison Dragon Mercenary Corps, but now I do."
"Second Commander, don’t underestimate yourself too soon," Amir said solemnly.
"I’m not praising others or belittling ourselves, just stating facts," White Whale smiled bitterly, ordering, "Get out of the vehicle. Rather than struggle in vain, it’s better to fight back. Even if we die, we’ll die in battle, not on the run."
White Whale and Amir got out of the vehicle, followed by the remaining eight members of the Spine Team.
"I thought you would struggle like cornered beasts and try to escape," Ye Fan said with amusement.
"I realize now that escape is impossible, so I won’t bother," White Whale said, feeling powerless as she stared at Ye Fan’s face.
"You do have a bit of self-awareness. Either way, you face death. Better to die in a frontal attack than to flee in panic and get your head blown off by a bullet," Ye Fan replied in a calm tone.
Such arrogant words, something White Whale and the others couldn’t have tolerated before, now they could only passively acknowledge as reality.
"I have a question: How did you know about this route? We thought it was well-hidden, yet it was exposed. Considering all of D Country, only Lao Zuo could have managed this. Did Lao Zuo provide you with intelligence?" Amir asked.
Ye Fan pondered slightly. He had seen the Peng Bird and could only assume the Peng Bird managed to control everything through his own abilities.
It now seemed there was some connection between Peng Bird and Lao Zuo.
Otherwise, Peng Bird truly wouldn’t have the capability to provide such precise intelligence.
What Ye Fan hadn’t considered was that Peng Bird actually had a deep friendship and connection with Lao Zuo.
"Yes, someone supplied intelligence, but I’m not sure it was Lao Zuo’s people," Ye Fan admitted.
Peng Bird hadn’t mentioned Lao Zuo, and Ye Fan wasn’t interested enough to delve into the deeper connections.
But thinking carefully, if Peng Bird couldn’t achieve this, it seemed it was indeed Lao Zuo supporting Peng Bird.
Ye Fan understood this, largely due to having some understanding of related forces before the mission.
"It must be Lao Zuo secretly supporting them," Amir thought, weeping inwardly. "If not for Lao Zuo’s meddling, we wouldn’t have lost so miserably."
This, of course, wouldn’t be said in front of Ye Fan, as it would be utterly embarrassing.
"I have a question. Could you help clear it up?" White Whale asked earnestly. "If I could resolve this puzzle, I could die without regrets."
"You’re wondering about my identity?" Ye Fan anticipated White Whale’s concern.
"A smart man, indeed," White Whale was increasingly shocked. She pressed, "Who exactly are you? I don’t believe you’re truly the Peng Bird, nor do I believe that Peng Bird’s mere group of assassins possesses such formidable combat power."
"Do you think I’d tell you?" Ye Fan said, smiling.
"I’m a dying person, so before I die, please let me understand," White Whale implored.
"Sure, but before I satisfy your curiosity, you must first tell me where the Poison Dragon Mercenary Corps’ base is," Ye Fan said, offering an exchange.
White Whale hesitated briefly and then seemed about to disclose a location.
"Second Commander, you can’t tell them, can’t say it," Amir urgently advised.
White Whale glared at Amir and proceeded to say a location unbidden.
Ye Fan snorted at the revealed location, not believing it, as he already had intelligence on four areas where the Poison Dragon Mercenary Corps’ base could be. Clearly, White Whale was fabricating, so he didn’t believe it.
Observing Amir’s shift from anxious to relaxed expressions further indicated that the location was false.
No matter how Amir tried to act outraged and tense, he couldn’t deceive Ye Fan.
"Now it’s your turn to answer my question," White Whale said, her gaze fixed intensely on Ye Fan.
"Since you weren’t sincere and didn’t provide the real location, I’m not going to waste my breath. Even if I told you, you wouldn’t believe it, so I won’t bother making an excuse," Ye Fan said dismissively. "I have reason to suspect you might be communicating with someone from the Poison Dragon Mercenary Corps. If you want to discover my identity, abandon that hope. I am the Peng Bird, and since you don’t believe it, there’s nothing more to say."
